News Flash: It’s Not All About Me…

With buying and developing your first house, or possibly any house, comes an opportunity for learning and personal growth. In my experience, a LOT of learning and personal growth, haha! And one of the greatest lessons I have learned, as both a designer and a person, is that it is not all about me — what I like, what I want, and how I see it. I had to learn to let go and make room for Casey’s desires and vision for our home, because it is exactly that, ours.

This was by no means an easy thing for me. For one, I had an expectation of how the design process would look. There are quite a few “design couples” I follow and, in most cases, one is the interior designer, while the other is not. Witnessing these couples from the outside, I noticed the designer making the creative decisions and their partner letting them own that process from start to finish. However, this was not what Casey wanted, and for good reason - he wanted our space to reflect and accommodate both of us. He wanted to be a part of the design and decision making process.

When I let go of my expectations and understood where Casey was coming from, designing our home together became a lot of fun, and I learned more about my partner in the process! Casey’s desires for the home mainly came from his Southern roots, the home he grew up in, and the traditions he grew up with in Nashville. He wanted our place to feel warm, inviting, and comfortable with lots of wood and what I would describe as a traditional-modern look.

Turns out, our aesthetics balanced each other out, and I am excited to see how this home comes together over time.
