Designing During Construction, My First Purchase, and a Round-up of My Favorite Armless Sofas
If you have been following our journey with this new house on Instagram or here on the blog, you know that when we bought our first house in California back in October 2020, it was just a dirt lot.
That said, as an interior designer I couldn’t wait to pick out furniture, decor, and everything else! So I jumped right into dreaming up what the inside of our home would one day look like. But due to the 11 month construction timeline of our house, my design process looked a little different.
I wanted to make some plans pre move-in, and there was no physical house to base decisions on, so I had to limit selections to a few key items like our primary bed, some living and dining room furniture, and pieces for our individual WFH spaces.
While working remote, we moved to Nashville for 4 months, so I had to get any dimensions / pictures I wanted from the model house before our move, as I’d need this information to make any design decisions.
Since all of this happened during the pandemic, I had limited, if any, access to furniture, lighting, accessories, or materials in person. So again, I limited myself to a few priority items, leaving the rest for after we move and live in the space. I used digital resources and fabric/finish samples to make selections.
While these unique challenges required extra creativity on my part, the remainder of the process was familiar; finding inspiration, creating mood boards, working with a budget, creating initial furniture layouts, and staying flexible throughout.
And my very first purchase for our new house? A custom armless sofa by Interior Define for our living room (space pictured above).
What I love about an armless sofa, and why I specifically chose one for our living room, is they take up a little less visual space, pair nicely with another armed-sofa, and serve up comfortable lounge seating for you and your guests.
