All The Deets on Our Brand New Shades!

This was our third house project and not only was it really enjoyable but it has also had a major impact on the look & feel of the entire place. Now it’s time to spill the deets on our brand new shades!

Here is a reminder of the factors that I kept in mind throughout the decision making process.

First, I selected simple roller shades for the entire space. They fit the clean and modern architecture of the house, worked with all the various window openings laid out across the floor plan, and made sense for our budget.

Second, I chose a few different materials for the window covering based on which space it was in, and keeping in mind the look and feel I wanted to achieve with them. On a personal note, I gravitated towards the woven wood collections because their texture and hand reminded me so much of window coverings in India. I wanted to use them wherever we could to make our place feel like home.

Third was selecting the Bracket Type, Bracket Color, and Chain Color. I knew from the beginning that I wanted brass hardware. It has always been my vision to swap out most of the hardware in our home for brass because I just love it and I think it brings this slightly feminine and very warm quality to a space. It also balances out all the white/grey tones, and modern vibe of our place. So, I went with round brass hardware (& chain), and IT. IS. BEAUTIFUL.

Fourth, we jumped into the technical side of things. I learned what these terms meant during the process, both by speaking with the technician as well as the design consultant; Mount Type and Roll Type.

  • Inside Mount: requires some depth from the window opening, the mounting hardware is installed inside the window opening.

  • Outside Mount: inside the house - but the mounting hardware is installed outside or above the window opening, so you can see the hardware.

  • Regular Roll: in reference to the roll of material at the top of the shade; you can see the roll in front, and the material drapes down from behind it.

  • Reverse Roll: the roll is hidden behind the material that drapes down in front of it. In my opinion this works best with an inside mount option.

Below is a photo of the two combinations I chose based on the need.

Fifth, and finally, I decided if the chain position (right or left side of the shade). Another technical detail, which might seem small, but let me tell you - it has a BIG impact! I didn’t think it was a big deal until they installed one of the shades with the chain on the left side instead of the right (as I had specified/ordered it). Because this particular window is near the corner, having the chain on the left side makes the opening/closing process quite painful; we are definitely having it swapped.

So there you have it! I would love to hear from you about your window treatment journey - was this breakdown helpful to you?
