A Plan to Cover 33 Windows in Our Home

When Casey and I finally got the keys to the new house in early September, our first priority, aside from unpacking and setting up, was to figure out the window treatment plan for our 30 plus windows. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s start at the beginning…

One of the things we love most about our spot is the amount of natural light we get through our large and many windows. At the same time, because we live in a housing complex, the homes are all in close proximity to one another, so, at least in certain parts of the house, you can totally see into the next door neighbors place 😅.

We really needed window treatments for privacy, but I also wanted to choose coverings with the right qualities.

  • A look and feel that went with the style of our house (modern)

  • Material selections that brought texture and warmth to the space

  • Color that added soft layers to our white walls

  • All for a price that was within budget!

All our windows are custom sizes so I reached out to two companies that are known for this; Smith & Noble and The Shade Store. I had taken basic measurements of all the windows we wanted covered and sent them to representatives at each company. However, because these were custom sizes (and probably for liability reasons), each company sent a technician out to our house to take very precise measurements of each opening.

For those of you who are new to this process, as I was, the measurement process is long (for good reason), especially if you have a lot of windows. It took both techs about 4 hours to complete the task and they were diligently working the entire time.

The Shade Store, who we ended up going with, had fewer time slots available so it took longer to get a tech out, but their design sales representative was very helpful and mailed me a number of swatches so I could use the time to narrow down material selections for our shades.

Material wise, I knew I wanted a warm-neutral palette and, ideally, a natural textural element. Budget wise, I knew I would need most of the shades to be in “Price 1” category material, saving room for “Price 2” category material on shades going in the most forward facing parts of our home (i.e. our den, living, dining, and kitchen). This helped me narrow down my selections, and I have to say that outside of making a decision about the kitchen window covering, I was really decisive about how to move forward with our shades.

Once our sales representative received field measurements, and since I had pretty much made my shade selections, she sent me a quote that closely estimated the final cost of product, shipping, and labor. There were a few adjustments that had to be made to get the price to where we needed it to be, and a couple more decisions which we thought would be best to make in person, but overall — we were pretty happy with where things had landed.

Next week, I will break down all the details; the shade type, direction, materials, and hardware finish I chose and why…stay tuned!
