Being Asked to Reselect our Kitchen Counters - Just 2 Months Before Closing

At the start of this month, we received an email from Taylor Morrison (TM) saying they had experienced a material delay for our finish package and that the original quartz countertop was no longer available. We were being asked to reselect our kitchen counters 2 months before the anticipated close date of our house; remember how I said there seemed to be quite a few set backs on this journey - this was certainly one of them.

I’m not going to sugarcoat it; this was super frustrating!

  • We were being asked to make this change 8 months after the initial finalization of interior finishes and just 2 months before we would (hopefully) be closing.

  • TM didn’t seem the least bit concerned about or apologetic for dropping the ball.

  • Any design plans I had made for our kitchen/dining/living space (that all speak to each other because of the open floor plan) would have to be adjusted to work with the new color selection.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t dwell on my frustration for long. I had to select a new quartz color so that this issue wouldn’t further delay the completion of our house. We were in Nashville at the time and I didn’t want to decide based on online images because it was hard to get an accurate idea of the true quartz color. So I waited till we got back to California and made a trip up to Richmond to see the samples in person.

Below, I’m holding the original finish (Piedrafina Surfaces Moonstone Quartz) in hand, and having a look at our four new choices. Bella Quartz - White Sands, Misty Gray, Lava, and Titanium (from bottom to top).

I had really fallen in love with the original Moonstone quartz because it was kind of the perfect muted gray with slight white streaks that provided some variety and depth. With a Carrara marble backsplash, white cabinets, and dark gray-washed wood floors, Moonstone brought everything together.

The TM designer suggested Misty Gray was the closest match, but in my opinion, the two were so different! First off, the image of Misty Gray that I had seen online looked like it a blue tint to it. In person, it didn’t have the same tint, but it was a darker gray peppered with black flecks which IMO didn’t work with the rest of the kitchen finishes either.

The darker options, Lava and Titanium, nicely contrasted the white cabinets, but I didn’t really like how they would pair with the backsplash and they felt too dark/gray when paired with our floors. And finally, we had White Sands, but I wasn’t sure I loved the idea of an all white kitchen.

So there I was, trying to decide, when it didn’t seem like any of the options was a great fit. What helped me make my decision? Which option did I end up choosing? It wouldn’t be fun if we didn’t have any suspense, right?

See you all next week and I’ll share the answers and some pretty photos ;-)
